What The Hell? The Go 2 Guy’s Picking Colorado To Win?
This is one of those times when I’m hoping reverse psychology really works. Why? Because there’s a bigger part of me that thinks the Cougs will lose today than the part of me that thinks we’ll win.
I don’t want to feel like that, but I’m not confident about our game at Colorado. We’re three-point underdogs, which suggests that it should be a close game if oddsmakers are correct with their betting line, and they usually are.
Here’s what worries me the most – I went to the Cal-Washington game at Husky Stadium last Saturday. The Golden Bears lost 31-23, but I still thought they had a slightly better team than the Dawgs. They moved the ball up and down the field all day long. Their defense bottled up Chris Polk. And were it not for the one long pass to Polk and their own botched series of plays at the goal line in the final minute, they could have won the game.
What’s Cal got to do with the WSU-Colorado game? Probably nothing. But Cal needed OT to beat Colorado when the two teams played last month in Boulder. And that Cal team, as much as I love the Cougs, looks like it has more horses than Washington State.
I also feel like there is a lot of pressure on the Cougs to win this game. Let’s be honest, if we don’t win this week and next week at UCLA, we’re probably not going to have a six-win season, which means we won’t go to a bowl game, which means we lose our coach.
Plus we’re on the road. We’re talented enough to beat a Colorado team that’s not very good, I understand that completely. But I’m just not feeling it today. I just have this feeling that we’re going to finish second in a two-horse race that figures to be a shootout.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still betting cold hard cash on the Cougs and 3. How can I bet on the Cougs when I think Colorado’s going to win? Because I’m sick when it comes to my alma mater’s football team, betting with my heart every single time. And if I lose, oh well.
Then what’ll happen next week? I’ll tell myself that UCLA will probably beat us, but I’ll still take the Cougs and the points anyway. It’s just the way it is, and even if I end up destitute from wagering on Washington State, I don’t care. I’m going to be loyal to my school to my dying day – or until I visit Gamblers Anonymous, whichever comes first.
Dear football gods… please prove me wrong today. Prove that I know absolutely nothing when it comes to handicapping games in general and this one in particular.
COLORADO 38, COUGS 23
THEN THERE’S THIS: Please rub it in my face and tell me how wrong I am at the Newport Hills Mustard Seed if the Cougs win. That’s where I’ll be watching the game. Hope you’ll join me there. Kickoff’s at 12:30. Coug special: A pitcher of Manny’s and 20 hot wings for $19.95.
AND THIS: The Seattle Mist won their lingerie football opener last night, crushing the Green Bay Chill 42-8. Mark’s daughter Angela Rypien threw three TD passes and Cam Warner ran for three TDs. More on the Mist in the weeks to come.

I agree with your prediction. Do not see the Coug defense keeping Paul Richardson out of the endzone a couple times and they have that small but quick RB. Buff def-line is probably better than the Coug O-line, so they will win the battle on both trenches.
UW was moving the ball at will on Cal the whole game. They put up over 400 yards of total offense. At no time in that game was I worried that UW would lose, especially after they marched down the field with ease after Allen’s 90 yard TD.
I agree with your logic, but am pleased the Cougs pulled it out.
I may also buy stock in the coronary care units in areas with a big WSU fan base . . .
Don’t know about other UW fans, but I think it’s waay too early to start bidding on Rose Bowl tx. I’m happy with improvement and wins, but you won’t catch me calling this team overpowering or even a strong contender for the North Division crown.
I sure hope we beat Stanford or Oregon (oh, that would be great!), but I’m not bteting the house on beating either this year . . .
CO is looking at a very grim inaugural season . . .
Best Regards,
Jim – I had a great time @ The Mustard Seed yesterday with you and the other asst. Cougar crazies! I just love the passion of the Coug faithful, and meeting your terrific family & Patrick the GO2GUY Webmaster was also definitely a treat.
Being a Husky myself (gee, where you aware of that over the past few years??), I’m sure glad I decided to come to your soiree’ incognito, dressed in my ol’ Sonics costume (us Halloween babies know all the tricks). Worked like a charm!
I loved how you led the Coug fans in the WSU fight song after each Coug score, Jim! Your passion for your school and your friends is admirable, and I was proud to lend my cheers & whistles to help lead the Cougs on to victory yesterday! Really a terrific game, and I’m so happy for the Coug receiver’s redemption in catching the winning TD pass, after botching a real easy similar TD pass earlier in the game.
Hope your Willie the GO2DOG is feeling better today with his back, as my own Ali the Wonder Dawg got a complete clean bill of health this past week by our shared great vet, Dr. Tomchick, @ Alpine Animal Hosp. in Issaquah. Thanks again for the referral. Woof!!
PS. And I’m now also sold on Manny’s craft beer out of Georgetown! good call……..who knew you were also a beer expert?!!
