Leach Gets $25,000 Every Time He Beats The Dawgs

How cool is that? Washington State athletic director Bill Moos knows how important it is to beat the Huskies. How important? Moos wrote a clause in Mike Leach’s multi-million contract that calls for him to receive $25,000 for winning the Apple Cup.

God I love that. I know it’s been reported this week already, but let’s think about that for a second – Moos put an extra premium on the team all of us Coug fans want to beat the most. That’s just beautiful – a bounty on the Dawgs so to speak.

I’m sure it’s been done before, but usually coaches receive bonuses for winning divisions and conferences and getting to bowl games and winning championships, but to beat your rival? I just can’t get over that. I know that $25,000 is probably pocket change to a man who’s going to make $2.25 million a year, but I don’t care – it’s a significant provision in his contract if you ask me, which you didn’t, but I answered the question anyway.

As long as we’re going down this road, why not take it a step farther? Heck, if Moos asked me for advice, I would have suggested the following Apple Cup bonuses:

• $10,000 if he beats the Huskies and covers the spread if we’re favored. (Hey, to some Cougs, this is important.)
• $5,000 if he loses to the Huskies but covers the spread if we’re underdogs. (Ditto.)
• An extra $2,500 if he beats the Dawgs by 10 points or more. An extra $5,000 if he beats them by 20 or more. An extra $10,000 if he beats them by 30 or more. And if he really rubs their noses in it and wins by 40, keys to a crimson Lamborghini!
• $10,000 if he says during Apple Cup week that “we’re going to kick their sorry purple-and-gold asses” and walks the walk.
• $20,000 if his offense rolls up 500 yards of offense against the Husky defense. (This is a slam dunk, but you never know, Nick Holt’s D might rise up and somehow hold us to 498 yards.)
• $10,000 if Leach’s offense causes Holt to be seen griping, complaining, grimacing, yelling, screaming and/or looking really confused and really, really overpaid and overmatched 10 times or more during the ROOT Sports broadcast. (Another easily reachable clause)
• And $50,000 if the Cougs win by 50 and Leach grabs a microphone and shouts: “Little brother THAT! Better get used to it, bitches!”

I know, I’m sick. I can’t help it. And the hell of it is I don’t want to be helped. Go Cougs.

Love those suggestions,Jim. I want nothing more than to see our Cougs beat the living dawgcrap
out of those nose-in-the-air Huskies. I haven’t been to a spring scrimmage in a while, but I’m sure no matter where they have it, there will be alot of Cougs in the stands. No matter where it will be, I’m there. GO COUGS!!!

    • Coug 81, have a good time at the spring game. It might be the only game they win next year!!!

Hey I’ll wave to you from San Antonio

      • Monterey Husky /

Harhar, Tlam, you crack me up. Go Huskies!
But I do love seeing that image of the coach with Mayes, Thompson and the others. Go Dawgs!

      • Cougar81 /

Dream on,tlam. The foundation is set for Leach. This guy has won everywhere he’s been. I’m
sure you’ll be waving amidst a sea of green and gold Baylor fans. I’m with Jim Moore. I’ll be rooting for Robert Griffith III to have a monster game against Nick Holt’s defense!

Did you know that the Cougs could win the next 30 Apple Cups and still trail UW in the overall series? (UW leads 67-31-6)
And Cougs also have never beaten the Huskies more than twice in a row. From 2000 to 2010, the largest margin of victory for the Cougs was only 7 points (All four victories came against some of the worst UW teams in history). In the last 20 Apple cups, WSU has only won 7.

Im stating facts, read it yourself
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Cup

Regardless, I think the Apple Cup is the best rivalry in the country and I always look forward to it.

    • ragtopman /

      Uhmmmm……Yeah, I think I’d settle for 30in a row. But I’d rather have 40.

  3. TruCoug89 /

How about bonuses for UW employees who get fired in the week following the Apple Cup? 50k for OC/DC, 100k for the HC, and 200k for the AD. That should liven things up.

Cougar bowl games? I count nine.
4 rose bowls (two in our lifetimes, but three in my dad’s)
2 holiday bowls (I was at the ’03 game and favorite memories are Wil knocking the crap out of Vince Young; Bassler’s punting clinic; & my kid, the dawg fan, wearing a coug sweatshirt, but he gave it back to me after the game)
    1 sun bowl
    1 aloha bowl
    1 copper bowl

    Go Cougs

  5. Wow! Nine?

If my math is correct you’ve seen the Dawgs win 7 Rose Bowls in your lifetime……just two short of the Cougs entire bowl history.

    • Caple Hater /

Yes, but he’s witnessed his Rose Bowls as an alum.

Contrast that w/most Mutt fans, who’ve seen bowl victories (and loses) as passive fans linked to the school via geography (and nothing more).

But hey, I’d be a Mutt fan too if my city had “pro teams” (loosely worded) like the SeaChickens, SubMariners and that NBA franchise that was stolen by the banjo kid from “Deliverance.” Futility like that might make any man wear purple and gold lame…

      • Wow shows how much you know our pro teams are on the rise, to anyone paying attention and what the hell is in the town of Pullman? Cow tipping?

      • caplehater…………………I’ve been to 5 of the 7 Rose Bowls I wrote about. And what does having to be an alum have to do with it? You don’t know me, do you?

That comment may be, might be, no, it is the most ridiculous post I’ve ever read on this blog.

If being an alum was the only way you could root for your team you wouldn’t need Martin Stadium, the Cougs could play in the Seven 11 parking lot in Pullman.

  6. Well, the Cougs could win 30 in a row, Oregon is almost a third of the way there already against UW. You know, your “real” rivals that you can’t beat.

  7. Cougfan /

    tlam,

That’s cool. How are past bowls going to prevent you from getting your ass handed to you by Coach Leach and the Cougs?

  8. Way to set the bar high…Sark gets $25K for 7 wins, $150k for a bowl game and $50k for making it to the Pac 12 title game. For 2.2 mil I would expect a little more than an Apple Cup. I do think it was a great hire and I seriously hope it takes a few recruits from the Oregon schools.

Say hey to “Willie” the go to pup. That frickin video still kills me.

  9. Dave Fleischman /

Jim, this article is embarrassing Coug fans. Why do you have to give the Dawgs so much importance? That’s exactly what they want. The Cougs should just focus on getting better and getting to a bowl regardless of what happens in the Apple Cup and stop feeding the Dawg’s ego by making them the prime target. Grow up!

    • ragtopman /

FYI – Leach also has incentives similar to Sark’s in similar amounts. The AC is just a little cherry on top.

  10. Cornerjeff /

I love that the Jim Moore haters have followed you to your new blog. You have a serious hold on them.

We might have played in more bowls if we were handing out new car keys and other inducements to our recruits like some unnamed schools did around the time the Huskies were coached by Don James and Jim Lambright.

  11. Purple Drank /

Why does it look like Mike Leach is getting frisked from behind every time he says “Cougs” on that video?

Looking forward to the Dawgs raining purple all over the pirate’s parade.

    Go Dawgs!

  12. 86 dawg /

Keep wishing…typical coug response- win one game and call it a successful year.

  13. Joe Papermaker /

Gotta love Jim Moore, he can work while he’s drinking……………or is it drink while he’s working?? Either way he does make it fun and I’ll bet he has already bought pirate eye patches for the Go Two Twins.

  14. Love the last bullet point, made me laugh out loud.

Stupid Fuskies on here are just nervous that last point is going to be true….every year.

  15. The "Kasen Leap" /

    Pipe Dream!

    Cougs are jealous of us!

You guys are absolutely worthless and nothing!

    Check the record books

    • el cougarino /

You keep those record books, Mutt… You’ll need something to cling to as you watch your purple and piss legacy fade further and further into the past… Yay 1991!!!! Wheeeee!!

      Go Cougs…..

  16. Cougar81 /

One thing about real Cougs: We hate everything about the Huskies and want to kick their no-good asses back to Montlake everytime we play them AND root for anybody they play to do the same to them. I can’t stand this patronizing attitude from Huskies who say they always root
for the Cougars. Yeah, right. That’s BS. GO COUGS!!!
