Give Me More M&J; Less Olivo
In today’s Kitsap Sun column, I wrote that it’s hard to get a gauge on the Mariners because even though they’re 6-5, five of the wins came against the A’s. And everyone knows that the A’s are one of the worst teams in baseball, destined to lose 90-plus games. I also argue that it’s time to see a lot more of Jesus Montero and John Jaso behind the plate and a lot less of Miguel Olivo, who’s hitting .111 and has never been more than a passable defensive catcher anyway. Give Me More Montero and Jaso; Less...

One would think… with Felix Hernandez facing Bartolo Colon, the Mariners would have been the 4-0 winners last night in their home opener at Safeco Field. Instead it was Oakland that came away with the 4-0 victory, riding an unexpectedly terrific pitching performance by their corpulent right-hander. I say corpulent because corpulent sounds nicer than fat. And the hell of it is, maybe extra weight has something to do with increased effectiveness. Felix is streamlined a bit this year and his velocity has dropped. Maybe it’s a coincidence,...

After watching the game the other night (the come from behind win at Texas), I’m feeling pretty good about this season for the Mariners. Here’s what I thought on Monday; It’s Early, But Mariners Give Us Some Hope.

I don’t pay too much attention to the NBA, but I’ll be watching the Mavericks-Warriors game tonight on TNT. I’ll be looking for a couple of 7-year-olds in their Cougar jackets. Hopefully they’ll get a chance to meet Klay Thompson, the former Washington State star who now plays for Golden State. Those 7-year-olds are my kids, Mikey and Stevie, and I wish I were going to the game with them tonight. They’ve never been to an NBA game, and they love the NBA. They’ve gotten into the NBA because they play NBA video games nonstop at home....

The Mariners looked like last year’s Mariners last night. Unfortunately. When you lose 1-0, you look like the 2011 team. Or the 2010 team for that matter. Hopefully it’s an aberration because this year’s team appears to have a more potent lineup. Converted closer Neftali Feliz shut down the Mariners on four hits through seven innings. That should not have surprised anyone. The M’s, in their history, had never gotten a hit off of Felix. They went 0-for-58 against Feliz before Justin Smoak smacked a single to center in the fourth...

We’re starting a weekly golf show at 710 ESPN Seattle, the debut of which can be found at 710Sports.com. If you want to take a listen, check out the podcast link at the bottom of the page. Shon Crewe and I are co-hosting the show. In the first show, we talked to Todd Milles of the Tacoma News Tribune to get a Masters preview. Milles is at Augusta National this week, following Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley as he plays in his first Masters. We also talk to Lindzi Cox, who’s featured in the Go 2 Guy video that accompanies this story. Cox is a...

You’ve probably heard that Ryan Leaf was arrested yesterday on burglary, theft and drug charges in Great Falls, Mont., his hometown. I was saddened by the news. Leaf, by all accounts, seemed to have kicked his addiction to pain-killers and was on the road back. He had written a book about his final season at Washington State and planned to write two more. We talked to him on “The Kevin Calabro Show” this week, and he sounded great. We had him on the show, not so much to talk about him, but to get his thoughts on Peyton Manning, Andrew...

The Go 2 Guy has learned that Seattle Mist quarterback Angela Rypien is switching lingerie football teams and will play for the Baltimore Charm this fall. In an exclusive interview, Rypien told me this week that she wants to return to Baltimore. She has family in the area and grew up there when her dad, Mark, quarterbacked the Washington Redskins. “I wanted to move so I talked to the (Charm) coach about going over there,” Rypien said. “There’s no family here. It’s just me. So it makes sense to go home.” Rypien is looking forward to...

TOKYO – By now you have all seen the highlight (Justin Smoak’s HR) and heard the score. The game was like many others we’ve seen too many times over the past two seasons, but hopefully the young guys will develop and get this thing going north. Pregame was less of a spectacle tonight (early morning for you suckers). They were giving the A’s equal love in the Japanese booth and talked about “Moneyball” (the movie was a sponsor) and how Bob Melvin was moving away from that model with more stealing and a more...

Exclusively for this website, John Doodigian is covering the Mariners in Japan. A Puyallup native, Doodigian tended bar at Cutters and Sneakers from 1983-86. Visited Japan 25 years ago, married a Japanese woman, had a kid, bought a piano and as he puts it, “got a life sentence on the rock.” He loves it in Japan. Doodigian currently teaches English at Kinki University. Wednesday morning at 3:05 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, the Mariners open the regular season against the Oakland A’s. Here’s John’s report on the Mariners’ preseason...
